Sciatica & nerve pain · Redditch
Sciatica is not just back pain. It is nerve pain that radiates from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg, often as far as the foot. Understanding what is compressing or irritating the nerve is the first step to resolving it.
Book Your AssessmentWhat is sciatica
Sciatica describes pain that travels along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the buttock and down the back of each leg. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis in itself, and identifying the cause is essential to treating it properly.
The most common causes include a disc bulge or prolapse putting pressure on the nerve root, piriformis syndrome where the muscle irritates the nerve as it passes through the buttock, spinal stenosis narrowing the canal through which the nerve travels, or joint dysfunction in the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joint.
Reece carries out a thorough neurological and orthopaedic assessment to determine what is driving the sciatic irritation and builds treatment around that finding, not a standard protocol.
Symptoms
Treatment
Not all sciatica is the same. Reece identifies whether the issue is discogenic, piriformis-related, joint-related, or something else, because the treatment for each is different.
Manual therapy to the lumbar spine, sacroiliac joint, and surrounding soft tissue can reduce the mechanical load on the nerve and improve symptoms significantly.
Alongside treatment, Reece provides specific exercises and load management guidance to reduce the risk of the problem returning.
